Firfox question

Hello,

Using Firfox with my new ISP has been a problem for the past year or so.
I'm still able to pay my phone bill using Konqueror (same ISP) but I
cannot view some video content with either Firefox or Konqueror. A
Google search shows that Bigpond supports Explorer exclusively.

The problem shows as a spinning star-like object that never stops. Can
anyone offer a solution?

By the way, Internet Explorer works flawlessly but I'd rather use Linux.

What version of Mandriva are you using? What version of Java?

In years past I have seen such problems due to use of java other
than that provided by Sun.

There are several points it is easy to err on, and I would
suggest goinf to Google Groups Advanced and searhing 2008 and
forward for java Bigpond Mandriva and maybe Sun or IcedTea or
open-source, though those last three may generate a lot of hits.

http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&

Possible: I vaguely remember one user in Australia or Southeast
Asia that I think never did solve his problem.

For most, Sun java (either packaged and distributed by Mandriva,
or straight from the Sun website) was required. Second, the java
plugin required was not the old java.so but the nplp.so version
which in 64-bit version under 2011.0 resides at,
/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libnpsoplugin.so

You have to check symlinks under your home directory, in
/etc/alternatives, in all plugins directories, and perhaps
elsewhere (e.g. under /usr/java/) to make sure they are not
pointing astray. In firefox, go to about:plugins and see
what/where shows up there.

If this does not get you in the direction you need to go, try
posting your query (with info on Mandriva and firefox versions)
to alt.os.linux.mandriva. Your chances of finding some who has
dealt with the problem before are better there.

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply Jim, you've given me something to investigate further.
What version of Mandriva are you using? What version of Java?
Firefox = 8.0, Sun Java 1.6.0. and Mandriva 2011.0.

I feel the problem may not be solvable because Bigpond's site worked
quite well and then all of a sudden I had trouble logging into the bill
paying section. A Google search shows that they had "upgraded" their
site making Firefox unworkable.

The links between Thunderbird and Firefox don't work for me either but
that's another problem common to many Linux users, apparently.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, I'll do some more checking.

I believe there is a way to tell Firefox (in the advanced
section, where you can edit individual lines) to behave like
Internet Exploder. I think you may have to add the line
manually, so you will need to find a HELP file on that to get the
syntax exactly right.

Don't know if this will work, but one more thing to try...

Cheers!
