For something so simple I'm having a heck of a time. A friend of mine
sold me the above printer for $25.00, it's like new. A popup keeps
saying I need a propritary driver. I already have HPLIP installed and I
know it's working since my HP6L works just fine. I've also looked in the
.dat file which shows all the HPLIP supported printers and the 1020 is
listed. When trying to print a test page from the HP Device manager it
says it starts and finishes the print job but nothing happens. I see the
below in my syslog:

Sep 24 14:59:40 localhost hp-mkuri: io/hpmud/hp-mkuri.c 375: HP LaserJet

Sep 24 14:59:40 localhost udev-configure-printer: main()

Sep 24 14:59:59 localhost udev-configure-printer:

This is on Mandriva 2010.2 using Gnome 2.30.0

Any help would be appreciated.

check /etc/cups/ppd to see if a file for my printer was there.

There is a file for the 1020 there. No matter what I do it keeps popping
up as needing a proprietary driver. I've even installed foo2js which was
suggested over on the alt.os.mandriva newsgroup and still no joy.

I hit the send button too quick. I also had to unplug the usb cable and
plug it back in on boot up when the cups was starting. Once it found
the printer all was well.

Thanks Phil, maybe I missed something in the install instructions. I'm
going to go through and re-install in a little while. Do you have a
'lp0' file and if so, where is it located? The directions say that it
will be in /dev/usb however I didn't have that folder so I created it
but the file still wasn't put there. Instead it was located
in /dev/bus/usb/005. Could you check and let me know where yours is.
I'll get back to you after I re-install the software.

Thanks
Chris

I have gone through and re-installed the software. I have followed the
instructions to the letter, I've run # make install-hotplug. I've gone
into MCC and removed and reinstalled the printer using the URI as stated
in the instructions. I have the firmware lp0 file going into /dev/usb as
it's supposed to. When I run

usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
Error: Inappropriate ioctl for device: GET_DEVICE_ID on '/dev/usb/lp0'

I get the above. I've pulled most of my hair out, I've restarted cups
multiple times and have logged out and back in multiple times. Now when
trying to print a file the printer icon in the task bar says the printer
is not connected. Any ideas?

Have you run as root hp-setup -i This generally works for me.

That was a no-go Anthony. The person who wrote foo2zjs suggested I
remove hplip however I don't think I want to do that. Any other
suggestions?
