Readers,

After failure to upgrade to 2010, reverted to 2008 which works nicely.
However, some programs need to be updated to be the latest, e.g.
mplayer with the latest ffmpeg. Is it possible to download the latest
mandriva 2011 rpm for mplayer and install everything required
automatically using urpmi. When the mplayer program is downloaded and
installation attempted, the command terminal response is that a
library file is missing. So this library is retrieved and mplayer
installation fails, asking for a _different_ library (!).

Well, too much difference between versions here. Why not installing
from scratch?
I suggest that because I don't think you will be able to upgrade from 2008 :s

Tried to install from 2010 cd but installation process did not
recognise the dvorak keyboard (there was no ability to set the
keyboard during installation, unlike version 2008).

Could you try with a 2010.2 CD or DVD? If not, you can file a bug report.

Does anyone knows about support of other kind of keyboards during
installation of 2011?

Is there a way to find out about the installation procedure _before_
burning another cd? Shouldn't this be documented? Why was this changed
from 2008?
