How not to use pulseaudio for audio

Pulseaudio tends to write tons of errors and I until last night when I
had to reboot after cleaning the box I had audio using the Alsa driver.
Now it's gone for some reason. Alsa is running and active in my run
level, it's selected in the hardware settings of Mandriva config. I just
can't remember what I did to get it working. What can I provide to get
some assistance?
